Women in Film 2019 | Leftover Women

Description

Leftover Women

Dir. Shosh Shlam and Hilla Medalia | 84 min | 2018 | Mandarin with English Subtitles | PG

‘Leftover Women’ is how the Chinese describe educated, cosmopolitan women who are not married and settled by the time they reach their mid-twenties. Through marriage markets, matchmakers, and government-sponsored dating events, the film follows three hopeful singles who, under immense pressure, are determined to find love on their own terms.

"An emotionally complex piece of personal portraiture that reveals the extent to which traditional attitudes still dominate Chinese society regardless of its globalised surface.” – Screen International

"Films such as the Leftover Women remind viewers that the fight for equality is not a problem confined to one country or community, but rather the world." - Tribeca Film Festival

REMEDY FOR RAGE
About Women in Film & Photography 2019

Women in Film is part of Objectifs' annual Women in Film and Photography showcase. In recent years, communities across the world have responded to enduring social, gender, racial and economic inequality through collective actions such as #Metoo, the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter. At the heart of it, such movements are often fueled by anger and frustration at an ostensible lack of political will or means to effect systemic change.

Our fifth edition Women in Film presents the Singapore premiere of five international feature films that demonstrate how women filmmakers have created works that speak to local and global concerns, exploring how rage against discrimination, repression and injustice can be channeled into a force for awareness, action and change through art. Co-curated by Leong Puiyee and Kelly Leow.
